Dating back to the 19th century, Tyrrells Wood Golf Club (TWGC) is a historic gem nestled in the heart of Surrey, which was transformed by five-time Open Champion and renowned course designer James Braid in the early 1920s. While rich in tradition and character, the Grade II listed clubhouse was in need of a thoughtful redesign to enhance member experience and modernise its offering without losing its heritage charm. In 2024, Design I.D. was engaged to reimagine the interior, improve spatial flow, and deliver a hospitality experience fit for both long-standing members and new visitors.

Design Brief & Objectives:

The club’s leadership had identified challenges in how members were using (or avoiding) some of the clubhouse’s key spaces. The James Braid Room, despite its prime location, felt disconnected from the Eddie Ward Bar, resulting in underutilisation. Likewise, the overall layout lacked cohesion, with minimal flow between the three main areas: the Eddie Ward Bar, the James Braid Room, and the Keswick Room.

Our objectives were clear:

  • Improve the spatial connection between the three distinct rooms.

  • Enhance the food and beverage offer to better serve both daily use and private events.

  • Create a cohesive and inclusive interior that respected the club’s heritage while introducing modern comfort and style.

Strategic Intervention

Reconnecting the Spaces:
One of the most impactful interventions was the transformation of the doorway between the Eddie Ward Bar and the James Braid Room. The original single door was replaced with a wider opening, featuring a concertina door that can remain open at all times without disrupting the flow of the space. This also provides the flexibility for privacy when the James Braid Room is used for private functions. Our primary goal with the expanded opening was to encourage natural movement between the two spaces.

To further connect the rooms, we introduced a custom-designed wine rack between the Eddie Ward Bar and the Keswick Room. This elegant feature not only stores 64 bottles but also includes glazed double doors, providing a strategic glimpse into the function room. This uninterrupted visual connection creates a natural flow through all three spaces, encouraging exploration and engagement.

Bar Design:
We designed two bespoke bars to elevate the club’s hospitality provision:

  • Eddie Ward Bar: Located at the heart of TWGC, the Eddie Ward Bar, named after the former golf professional, is the principal bar for everyday use and gatherings.

  • Keswick Room Bar: Named after Major Henry Keswick, who transformed TWGC in the early 1920s, the
Keswick Room bar is a smaller, fully-equipped bar tailored for functions and private events.

Both bars were crafted in stained oak, featuring traditional Wainscot/Georgian-style panelling to seamlessly

blend with the existing architectural language. Bar tops were finished in Himacs Aurora Daymoon with a 75mm bull nose lipping for a classic, substantial feel. A&H brass foot rails add elegance and functionality.

Key Features of the Eddie Ward Bar:

  • 10 beer pumps and 2 ale pumps.

  • Integrated appliances including double bottle coolers, wine fridge, glasswasher, sinks and till.

  • Tiered freepour display and antique mirror back bar with carved mouldings.

  • Separate coffee station designed in the same style, with antique brass pull handles and a panelled reeded glass screen.

Decorations, Furnishings and Fixtures:

The decorations and furniture scheme were carefully curated to provide a balance of style, comfort and versatility:

  • Fixed banquet seating combined with freestanding tables, upholstered chairs, sofas and high-top options.

  • Soft textures and classic forms invite relaxed socialising while supporting formal occasions.

  • 2/3 height panelling in Farrow & Ball Blue Gray No.91 adds depth, warmth and visual interest throughout.

  • Mindful design to frame key views from the bay windows with beautiful blinds and curtains.

Lighting Design:
Lighting played a pivotal role in setting the tone for each space:

  • Pendant lighting above the bars, bay windows, and walkways for ambience.

  • Integrated LED strip lighting in shelving and under bar tops in warm white tones.

  • Concealed spotlighting for feature emphasis.

  • Wall-mounted fixtures for added character and layered illumination.

Outcome

The redesigned Tyrrells Wood Golf Club clubhouse is now a more welcoming, cohesive and functional environment. The previously underused James Braid Room has been reintegrated into the member experience, while the refurbishment of the Keswick Room bar has enabled seamless hosting of events.
Through sensitive spatial planning, thoughtful joinery, and elevated material choices, Design I.D. and its collaborative partners – M2 Project Surveyors, Brynwell, RHA Furniture and Sturts - has delivered a clubhouse that reflects the club’s storied past while confidently embracing its future.

Customer Feedback

“From the start (developing the design) through development and delivery, the service we received from Design I.D. was the best! We had worked with interior designers before and been disappointed; Design I.D. provided professional input and guidance and listened to our wishes and requests to deliver a project our members absolutely love. I should add that all work was completed on time (7 weeks) and on budget - no mean achievement.
On behalf of TWGC, I would highly recommend Design I.D. and Ciara Neve, our Team Leader.”
